The Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat) was released on October 10th, 2010. It’s very simple and safe to use. I just installed ubuntu 10.10 in my computer and it seems to be very good. What you need is just a blank CD to burn the Ubuntu 10.10 image which can be downloaded from here. When the download is complete, burn it to a blank CD (8x speed is recommended). After that insert the CD into your CD Rom Drive and restart the computer. Make sure that you change the first boot disk priority to CD Rom from your BIOS. Now the installation process begins.

Wait for the CD to load and start the process. This takes a long time but don’t get dis hearted.

2. Welcome

After that step is over, you will be able to see the Ubuntu default wallpaper. This is the step where you can choose whether you want to install Ubuntu 10.10 or just try it out. If you really want Ubuntu to stay in your computer when the CD Rom is removed, you will have to install it! This is an installation guide so we will continue with the installation process. Click the “Install Ubuntu” button to proceed to the next step. Also you can select the language for your installation from the left pane of this window.

3. Preparing to install Ubuntu
In this step, Ubuntu 10.10 tells whether your computer meets the minimum requirements. It really doesn’t matter whether you are connected to the internet. You can install the updates later. But you need at least 2.6 GB of free space and you need to be connected to a power source because the installation process can drain a lot of juice out of your laptop’s battery if you are using one.

4. Allocate drive space

This window shows three options. they are

  • Install alongside other operating systems: If you wish to install ubuntu along with other OS like windows 7 ( dual booting).
  • Erase and use the entire disk: Â To delete all data in your hard disk including your OS and install Ubuntu.
  • Specify partitions manually (advanced): Â To create partitions and change the file systems.

How to create partitions manually

Select “Specify partitions manually (advanced)” button mentioned in the last step. “/dev/sda” represents your primary hard disk and “/dev/sdb” represents your second hard disk only if you have one. Select the hard disk you want to install ubuntu. If you have no useful information or an OS in that hard disk, you can delete all partitions in that hard disk. When you delete partitions, it will show “free space”. Click on the “Add” button. In the new window, type 2048 in the “New partition size in megabytes” field and select the “swap area” option from the “Use as:” list. Click the OK button. Now, click on the “Add” button. In the new window, select the “Primary” option, input a value between 10,000 and 50,000 in the “New partition size in megabytes” field and select / as the “Mount point.” Click the OK button. Click on the “Add” button again and from the new window and select the “Primary” option, type in whatever space you have left in your hard disk in the “New partition size in megabytes” field. And select /home as the “Mount point.” Click the OK button. You are done with the hard part.

Click “Install Now” to proceed with the installation process.

5. Where are you?

Select an appropriate time zone in your country from the world map and click “Forward”.

6. Keyboard layout

This window is for selecting your keyboard layout. Click the “Figure Out Keyboard Layout” button if you don’t know your keyboard’s layout. Click “Forward” to continue.

7. Who are you?

Here, you will have to type in your name, a username and a password. Please note that the computer’s name will be selected automatically and the password is a must! Click on “Encrypt my home folder,” to encrypt your Ubuntu 10.10 installation. Click ” Forward” and Maverick Meerkat will start to install.

8. Welcome

Ubuntu is being installed and the window will show you many features of Ubuntu 10.10. The Maverick Meerkat installation process will take 10- 15 minutes according to your computer’s performance. When the installation is complete, it will ask you to restart the computer. After the restart, Ubuntu 10.10 will be ready to be used!
